A great walk-around effect! Show a red penlight. Open your empty hand palm up and show the audience your performing surface...the close-up artists stage. Shine the light center stage. Affordable lighting equipment! Close your hand. Magically produce a sponge ball from your empty stage hand. (sorry for the pun!) It is examinable as well as the light. Place it back in your hand. Shine the light and it vanishes then reappears in your pocket. Explain that sponge absorbs not only water, but light. Shine the light on the ball and slowly retract the light. Kill the light and the ball remains illuminated! Tap the ball with the penlight and light is transferred back to the penlight. Then blow out the pen light and magically vanish the ball. If you fancy sleight of hand vanish the penlight too.
I use this to open tables. It's off-beat and gets a nice response.
